Ipswich “legends’’ including the city’s business and education leaders and a former Olympian have been announced for a legacy project for the 2032 Olympic Games.

The Ipswich Legacy Working Group combines selected members from across the region who will help contribute to the Ipswich 2032 Legacy Roadmap.

Mayor Teresa Harding said the working group aimed to identify, inform and shape legacy opportunities in the lead-up to, and beyond, the Games, which will be held in Brisbane.

“This group will inform and shape the Ipswich 2032 Legacy Roadmap which is intended to define the highest priority opportunities for our region, to influence local investment and shape the contribution that Ipswich can make to the event,” she said.

“For Ipswich to be successful in maximising our Games’ opportunities, we need our community to be at the forefront of that vision. We know this group will work with council to bring forward innovative ideas for our legacy programs and initiatives.

“Ipswich is fortunate to have such a great cross-section of community leaders to ensure we get the best outcome for our city.

“From Olympians to business identities, leading figures in education and social services and across private enterprise and government, we’ve had an excellent group of people to put their hands up to help build Ipswich’s legacy.”

Among those chosen for the working group was entrepreneur and owner of Willowbank’s Queensland Raceway, Tony Quinn, who said he was “ready to get his hands dirty’’ and contribute to the committee to support the Ipswich area.

“I am well known for my directness and getting the job done,” Mr Quinn said.

“I would like to think the committee will be very active and not discuss things for years and have another report or review.

“I am here to get stuff done to support the success of the Ipswich area.’’

Mr Quinn said he understood the enormity of the task facing the legacy team but said he was capable of helping where needed.

“I can say that I think I’ve experienced the Olympics of motorsport, I’ve participated in the Nurburgring 24-hour event which throws everything you could think of at a competitor,’’ he said.

“So the Olympics to me means that the best in the world come and duke it out and the last man standing is the champion.’’
