Investigations continue after arson attack at Lowood Police Station

Police have vowed to put every effort into catching the man responsible for an arson attack at a rural police station.

Three vehicles destroyed during arson attack at Lowood Police Station

More than a week after an arson attack destroyed every police vehicle in a rural Queensland community, investigators have vowed to make “every effort” to catch the culprit.

Firefighters were rushed to Lowood Police Station, about 50km west of Brisbane, shortly after midnight on November 3 when local residents reported the station was on fire.

Three police vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, leading police to raise concerns their ability to police the area would be impacted.

“The issue for us is that we have three vehicles assigned to here,” Detective Inspector David Briese said at the time.

“We’re going to have to take vehicles from other areas to ensure we can continue to deliver business as usual.

“I doubt that person thought of the flow-on effect … we cannot serve the community to the standards we have.”

On Thursday a Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed no arrests had been made but added that “investigations are ongoing”.

Insp Briese said the station could have been destroyed without the quick response from residents and other emergency services.

“At the time there were no police in the station,” he said.

“We are extremely lucky … (they) were able to put those cars out and stop the rest of the station from being damaged or destroyed.”

Inspector Briese said CCTV footage from the station revealed a single adult male, dressed in black, set fire to one vehicle with a jerry can and lighter about 12am.

The fire quickly spread to two other vehicles parked next to the Lowood station, destroying two sedans and an SUV.

Crime scene investigators arrived at the station the following morning and were seen canvassing the neighbourhood for information.

Barbara, who lives opposite the station, said she woke up around 12.30am when firefighters arrived at the station.

“I’m just shocked,” she said.

“I have no idea why anyone would do this. The coppers here are just lovely.”

Inspector Briese said police are putting all their efforts into finding the man.

“We won’t know (why this occurred) until we catch him,” he said.

Anyone with information can contact the Lowood Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
