As the Omicron peak nears in parts of South East Queensland Ipswich cases continue to climb with some suburbs recording more than 2000 cases.

Ipswich residents wait hours for COVID-19 tests

As the Omicron wave sweeps Queensland Ipswich recorded 13,021 Covid-19 cases with Redbank Plains and Springfield Lakes remaining the regions hot spots.

The state recorded 3,551 new cases overnight as of Wednesday, January 26.

New Queensland Health data reveals amidst the recent outbreak following the opening of borders, at least 2089 Redbank Plains residents have tested positive.

Other Ipswich suburbs recording high transmission on the virus includes; 1311 cases at Springfield Lakes, 930 at Collingwood Park/Redbank, 860 at Goodna, 853 at Raceview, and 786 at Ripley.

Ipswich central/North, Churchill, Yamanto, Leichhardt, One Mile, Springfield and Riverview seem to have the lowest transmission rates recording between 152 and 341 cases.

About 95 per cent of Ipswich residents received their first dose of the vaccine by January 25 and 91.8 per cent were fully vaccinated.

West Moreton chief executive Dr Kerrie Freeman said hospitals across the district are focused on emergency care and urged residents to get vaccinated.

“I would encourage everyone who is yet to be vaccinated or eligible for their booster shot to make a booking for that vaccination now,” Dr Freeman said.

Ipswich Hospital recently dedicated five wards to Covid patients, and repurposed an existing facility into an intensive care unit for those who become critically ill.

As the Omicron peak nears in parts of South East Queensland, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said vulnerable residents should try to limit their movements.

“We do believe the peak on the Gold Coast is now coming down,” the Premier said during the daily Covid news conference.

“We’ll see that peak in the rest of southeast Queensland happening shortly … in the next seven days.”
