The couple woke at 5am on Tuesday to the sound of a dog whining in agony and distress.

Lotte Hougaard said she has been left rattled by the heartbreaking and shocking freak accident and did all she could to console the dog until help arrived.

Mrs Hougaard said Punter was hanging by his legs so she and her husband made a makeshift support for his body from a table and boxes.

“He wasn’t making much of a fuss… he was such a beautiful and lovely dog,” she said.

Mrs Hougaard said Punter had been hanging for more than an hour before an amazing crew from the Ipswich Fire Department cut him free.

“He didn’t look good, he was so tired, and he was shaking,” she said.

The mental spike missed all of Punter’s major arteries and thanks to the community rallying around him he is expected to make a full recovery after surgery at the Booval Veterinary Hospital.

Punter’s owner Shayne Phie took to a concerned Facebook community forum to express his gratitude to those who helped his ‘best mate’.

“Punter is a huge part of our life and I’m extremely grateful for (Lotte and her partner) for making the post that led me to getting him to the vet,” he said.

“A very traumatic event for many parties but… he is in recovery in front of the TV relaxing.

“I will be shutting my gates from now on so this cheeky bugger can’t go sniffing again.”
