An Ipswich man in his 20s has died in a horrific crash on the Warrego Highway on Tuesday morning.
Police are working to determine how the Karana Downs man’s Toyota RAV4 veered off the road into a trailer parked in a stopping bay on the eastbound lanes about 8.20am.
The crash occurred opposite the Puma service station in Bundamba.
The 26-year-old was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.
He has been identified as father-of-one Josh Austen.
It is understood a truck driver had parked his trailer just off the eastbound lanes and then drove his vehicle into the truck bay directly opposite on the westbound lanes, where he witnessed the crash.
Police have closed the eastbound lanes as the Forensic Crash Unit begins its investigations into the cause of the tragedy.
Inspector David Nevin said factors including fatigue would be considered but little was known at this stage.
“At this point we don’t know what sort of speed the car was travelling when it has struck the trailer, or whether the driver has had a chance to slow down,” he said.
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward, and have so far spoken to the owner of the trailer, who was nearby at the time of the incident.
Emergency services, including paramedics and firefighters, were still at the scene of the crash as of 11am.
The highway is expected to remain closed for several hours, with traffic being diverted via Mt Crosby Rd and Walloon.
Trucks too big to travel through detours are lined up on the highway.
