A heated argument ended in robbery, violence, and injury after a young man struck his neighbour with a pool cue at a popular Ipswich shopping centre, a court has heard.
Booval man Dylan Graham Lloyd, 24, appeared in Ipswich District Court on Thursday, pleading guilty to one count of robbery with violence while armed in company.
Prosecutor Mr Galloway told the court there had been some “animosity” between Lloyd and his neighbour, a 47-year-old man, which led to a “heated exchange” on the evening of February 19.
Mr Galloway said Lloyd’s neighbour left the dispute to pick up some beers from a nearby BWS.
The court heard he was returning home about 8.30pm when he noticed Lloyd and Lloyd’s girlfriend walking towards him in the Booval Fair shopping centre carpark.
Mr Galloway said the man began to record them with his phone.
The woman allegedly pulled a short pool cue from under her shirtsleeve and handed it to her boyfriend, who then used it to assault their neighbour.
A struggle ensued as the man fought to maintain possession of his phone, with Lloyd eventually obtaining the device and fleeing the scene.
The neighbour suffered injuries including cuts to the back of his head, ear and arm, as well as bruising to his back and ribs, and was transported to hospital.
Lloyd was subsequently located at his residential address by police and remanded in custody.
He had served nearly nine months by Thursday.
Judge Horneman-Wren SC said he had taken Lloyd’s early plea of guilty into consideration when deciding a sentence, as well as the time he had already served.
“Clearly I find it quite abhorrent that there would be attacks such has this in the carpark of a shopping centre at 8.30 at night,” Mr Horneman-Wren said.
Lloyd was ultimately sentenced to 2.5 years imprisonment with immediate parole release.
