A recently-released inmate has been accused of a wild crime spree in which he allegedly broke into a childcare centre and other local businesses.
An Ipswich court heard at his bail application today, November 9, that 23-year-old Braiden Jack Unwin was busted hiding from police in a locked toilet yesterday with drugs stashed in his anus.
Magistrate Kathleen Payne said Mr Unwin offered police multiple false names at the Redbank address where he was located, before making some admissions to the allegations against him.
Mr Unwin stands charged with two counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence, two counts of enter premises with intent and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs, possess utensils or pipes, possess property suspected of having been used and contravene direction or requirement of a police officer.
He is accused of breaking into multiple Ipswich businesses including IGA at Augustine Heights, Pattysmiths burger restaurant at Bellbird Park, and Goodstart Early Learning Centre at Redbank Plains.
Ms Payne said he was further accused of smashing windows to gain entry on two occasions.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Marjorie Bridger said Mr Unwin had a “shocking” criminal history for similar offending across the Northern Territory and Queensland.
The court heard Mr Unwin had been wanted on multiple warrants at the time of his arrest and was also on bail for an unlawful use of motor vehicle charge.
Defence lawyer Grace Anderson said her client struggled with methamphetamine addiction and instructed that he had only recently been released from Lotus Glen Correctional Centre.
He had been homeless for a time after moving to South East Queensland and stolen small change on these occasions for food and fuel, Ms Anderson explained.
Ms Payne said the manner in which Mr Unwin was located gave her “no confidence” he would attend court if granted bail.
She denied Mr Unwin’s bail, and he was remanded in custody for sentencing on January 29, 2024.
Police previously confirmed they had arrested a man after he went on a wild crime spree, allegedly breaking into businesses and stealing cash and alcohol.
Detectives have charged the 23-year-old with multiple offences after investigations into a number of break and enters in the Ipswich area.
Police will allege that on October 17, between midnight and 6am, Braiden Jack Unwin broke into a business on Leon Capra Drive in Augustine Heights and stole cash and alcohol.
On November 1, Mr Unwin allegedly broke into a business on Jones Rd in Bellbird Park where he stole more cash, police alleged.
It was also alleged he broke into a second Leon Capra Drive business on October 27 and an Eagle St business in Redbank Plains on October 18, but left empty-handed.
After extensive investigations by the Ipswich Criminal Investigation Branch, detectives found and arrested Mr Unwin at a Redbank Plains address on November 8.
He has been charged with two counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence, two counts of enter premises with intent and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs, possess utensils or pipes, possess property suspected of having been used and contravene direction or requirement of a police officer.
He is expected to appear at Ipswich Magistrates Court today, November 8.
