Hiyaan Kapil: Mother of Logan Hospital death boy left waiting for ambulance at his funeral

Logan preschool student Hiyaan Kapil was farewelled by friends and family at an emotional funeral on Thursday, while the search for answers into his sudden death continues.

The family of a five-year-old boy who died after being sent home from hospital have been left waiting for an ambulance after the boy’s mother collapsed at his funeral.

Hiyaan was taken to Logan Hospital on Sunday night with stomach pains and vomiting, but his parents were told he had a stomach bug and needed hydration and bed rest.

But his symptoms worsened and he died before he could return to hospital in an ambulance.

An autopsy was inconclusive and the family have been told it may be months before they learn the cause of Hiyaan’s death.

Nine News reported Hiyaan’s mother collapsed with breathing difficulties at his funeral on Thursday and an ambulance was called, but none was immediately available.

The service was delayed nearly an hour. An ambulance eventually arrived.

An unidentified family friend later said: “We need to know why he was discharged.

“He should not have been discharged from the hospital.”

Hiyaan’s father Uttam Kapil told Nine the family were still searching for answers.

“We still don’t know what happened to him, why he go (sic),” Mr Kapil said before he burst into tears.

It comes after Logan Hospital recently recorded its second busiest day on record, and with new data showing over 40 per cent of Queensland patients were stuck ramped with paramedics at hospitals during the March quarter, despite emergency department presentations falling by 9 per cent.

The Kapil family will meet their local MP on Friday.
