Woman dead, three others injured in horror day on Mt Beerwah

A woman in her 20s who died after falling 40m at Mt Beerwah on Saturday has been described as an experienced climber. It comes as another woman was forced to wait almost 24 hours for rescue in the Gold Coast hinterland.

A woman who tragically fell to her death while hiking at Mount Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday has been described as an experienced climber who frequented the mountain.

Emergency services rushed to three incidents at the Glass House Mountains location on Saturday.

Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Leighton Allen said the woman, 28, who was believed to be from the Sunshine Coast, and another person with her were believed to be experienced climbers who “climbed there regularly”.

“They weren’t amateurs,” he said.

Mr Allen said the woman died after falling 40 metres onto rocks on the eastern side of the mountain.

He said she was declared deceased once his team got to her, with her body retrieved at about 5pm.

The LifeFlight 511 rescue helicopter was involved in the operation, and was called to other incidents on the mountain on Saturday, including winching another hiker to safety.

In yet another incident, a man fell and dislocated a shoulder after losing his footing and falling several metres.

The incidents occurred just hours after a paraglider crashed into the side of a cliff face at the same spot, requiring a rescue chopper to transport him to hospital after he sustained serious injuries.

While it was “very rare” to have three incidents in one day, Mr Allen said the weather and climbing conditions were normal yesterday.

Mr Allen said hikers, regardless of their experience, should always be prepared when attempting to climb mountains, bringing their phones and water.

“Incidents though, can and do happen,’ he said.

Meanwhile, a 57-year-old hiker was rescued in a 21-hour operation after injuring her ankle at the Binna Burra area in the Lamington National Park.

“Due to the weather conditions, they couldn’t use a helicopter to winch her out so that had to be done all on foot.”

“That started approximately yesterday at four o’clock in the afternoon and I understand it’s only just recently that they’ve actually extricated the patient,” said Mr Allen on Sunday afternoon.

The woman was then driven to the Gold Coast University hospital with a suspected fractured ankle.
