A MAN who threatened to take his own life and sent dozens of florid, "abusive" messages to his victim was convicted in Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday.

Liam Douglas Smith, 23, pleaded guilty to harassing his victim through Facebook messenger in August last year.

Between 7:53pm on August 11 and 8:29am on August 12, Smith sent 41 messages to his victim after the "breakdown of their friendship".

The court heard the messages were "harassing and abusive in nature", and the man threatened to take his own life if the victim didn't reply.

"It doesn't matter anymore, I hope you're happy with the choices you've made," one of the messages said.

"I hope you know I have tried to kill myself five times in the last month but for whatever I've woken up.

"Please just call me.

"I'm finishing this bottle and no one will ever hear from me again," he continued.

The police prosecutor said Smith then threatened to "destroy" his victim's relationship with her partner, and sent harassing messages to them both.

"Hello Mitchell just wanted to ask you how my d--- tastes and tell you your entire relationship is a f------ lie and she's told me time and time again you're a spineless f------.

"You're a f------g whore.

"I hope your boyfriend likes the taste of my c---.
"See you c---."

The victim made a complaint to police on November 28 last year, and police spoke with Smith on January 1, when he admitted to sending the messages after the breakdown of their friendship.

Defence lawyer Lisa Taylor said Smith was embarrassed by his conduct and showed remorse for his actions, having written an apology to the victim and not contacting her again since that night.

"I have been instructed that on the night of the offending my client was suffering from a mental breakdown and ended up in hospital as a result," she said.

"He had consumed both prescription medication and alcohol resulting in suicidal thoughts over his relationship breakdown."

She said the messages were attention-seeking and Smith did not intend to follow through on the threats of suicide.

Magistrate Chris Callaghan said it was a serious offence committed while suffering a mental condition, and sentenced the man to 12 months good behaviour with a $1000 reconnaissance.

No conviction was recorded.
