Where $1.2b is being spent across the Wide Bay

The bulk of the investment is taken up by the Bruce Highway Cooroy to Curra Bypass around Gympie, but major projects are also happening at Bundaberg, Torbanlea, Maryborough, the Mary Valley Gin Gin and Hervey Bay.

Improved police services, upgraded schools and better roads are on the cards across the Wide Bay Burnett region as the State Government continues to clear its “to do” list.

More than $1.2 billion of infrastructure work spread across 53 projects is being delivered for the Wide Bay Burnett region according to the State Government’s latest infrastructure pipeline report.

The bulk of the investment is taken up by the $1 billion Gympie Bypass, which has been under construction for a year.

It is not the only road in the Wide Bay getting some love.

Upgrades are in the works for the Isis Highway near Bundaberg for $41 million, flood and intersection fixes for Pialba Rd at Torbanlea for $27 million, and Bruce Highway at Saltwater Creek between Maryborough and Gin Gin is getting a $90.3 million facelift.

Schools getting a facelift include the Mary Valley State College, Gin Gin State High School, Parke State School, Maryborough South State School.

A new $9.6 million hall is being built at Urangan State High School.

Public services are getting a boost in several of the Wide Bay’s towns, too.

Improvements are on the cards for the Gin Gin Police Station, Maryborough Police Station ($4 million), Hervey Bay’s Water Police Station, as well as the redevelopment of Bundaberg Hospital, Hervey Bay Hospital.

The Rainbow Beach fire station is being replaced at a cost of $2.5 million.

The Fire and Emergency Services regional headquarters at Maryborough will be replaced thanks to $12.1 million funding, and $39 million is being spent on the Fraser Coast mental health project.

There is another $21.5 million being sunk into the Paradise Dam in 2021-22 by way of planning and essential works.

The projects are to help cater for a population across the Wide Bay Burnett expected to grow by 15 per cent over the next 15 years, topping 347,000 by 2036.

Bundaberg MP Tom Smith said projects like the city’s new Agriculture and Horticulture Centre “will not only create construction jobs, but once complete, support jobs in training and education”.
