A grieving Queensland father, left critically injured after a horror-head on crash which claimed the life of his beloved wife and daughter, is said to be making a ‘miracle’ recovery.
Alex Greig and his family were travelling along Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Rd at Mt Irving on July 8 when the SUV he was driving collided head-on with a truck.
His wife, Jessica, a 29-year-old nurse, was killed instantly while their 12-year-old daughter, Giselle, also died at the scene.
Despite the unimaginable loss, Alex still has much to live for.
Jett, 10, and Oceana, 7, also survived the crash and feared the worst when their dad was flown away to Brisbane for critical care.
On Thursday, Alex’s mother, Colleen Pring, told the Gympie Times her son was walking and talking by himself despite suffering a brain injury which doctors had predicted would leave him beyond repair.
Alex remained in the RBWH ICU for three weeks before he was moved to the Princess Alexandra Hospital rehabilitation unit on August 25.
“He’s actually a miracle,” Mrs Pring said.
“(The doctors) weren’t expecting a good prognosis at all … he can shower himself and do all those things they said he would never do.”
While Alex has memory issues as a result of his brain injury , he still remembers that terrible day.
“It’s fairly traumatic for him, but he’s just taking it one day at a time,” she said.
“He does have a psychologist and some people there who are talking through those issues with him, but that will be a long-term thing.”
It’s unclear when Alex will be able to leave hospital and live independently but so far, the signs point to ‘soon’.
Mrs Pring thanked the community for their unwavering support of the Victory Heights family and said her son was “very happy” knowing everyone was behind him.
A GoFundMe, started on July 26 to raise money for Alex’s recovery and rehabilitation, has so far raised $2260.
