The shocking moment an impatient ute driver accelerated into the wrong lane to overtake a van turning at a busy school intersection has been caught on camera as police beg drivers to calm down and stop the carnage on Wide Bay roads.
The ute was caught on dashcam at the busy Gympie intersection in front of one of the region’s biggest primary schools, Southside State School, on Wednesday afternoon.
The footage, captured about 4.30pm outside the school, shows the ute approaching the intersection of Exhibition Rd and Glastonbury Rd behind a white van.
Both vehicles enter the turning lane with their indicators on to turn right.
Instead of waiting their turn, though, the driver of the ute accelerates across the road and turns into the wrong lane to overtake the van waiting to turn right into the correct lane.
The driver who caught the footage, who asked to be identified only as Mitchell, was shocked by what he witnessed.
“It’s crazy to see young drivers make stupid choices on our roads,” he said.
“All the what ifs that could have happened, especially in a school zone.
“All because he didn’t want to wait for the car in front.”
The footage emerged amid pleas from police for drivers to take more care on the region’s roads as the Wide Bay Burnett grapples with the worst road toll in Queensland, with 29 killed already this year.
Police in Gympie are also cracking down on hoon behaviour with four men charged this month with a range of driving-related offences, including filming themselves and others hooning.
