UPDATE:
THE speed limit is 100kmh along the narrow bitumen strip which constitutes Old Maryborough Rd, about 10km out of Gympie, where a Nambour district man lost his life on Sunday about 1pm.
But it is a scary speed on the winding road, less than 100m from a blind descent and bend.
Neil Drescher heard the acceleration as, according to police, a man, 58, attempted to overtake another vehicle, carrying a man and a woman, his right hand wheels on the dirt.
The driver of the first vehicle appears to have over-corrected and crashed into the car he was overtaking, before losing control and crashing into a roadside tree, a police spokesman said.
His vehicle, a Hyundai Getz, was spun around by the impact and also crashed into a second tree about 1m away.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Service workers were called to the scene about 1.05pm and arrived about 14 minutes after that, according to Gympie station officer Don Wilson.
Police and Queensland Ambulance Service crews were already on the scene.
Mr Wilson said his workers were using hydraulic equipment to free the driver, but unfortunately the man was pronounced dead before they could finish their work.
Mr Drescher said he was working in his shed when he heard the sound of an accelerating vehicle, followed by the "bang" of a sudden impact, just a few steps from his front gate.
He said the road at that point was not a place for heavy traffic or for doing 100kmh.
Even in normal traffic, vehicles going in opposite directions have to leave the bitumen to pass each other safely, he said.
"But if the highway is closed to the north, we get B-doubles and semitrailers all coming past here," the resident said.
