The owner of new Gympie business Little Birdie Hair Co, Tenille Lawrence, began her hairdressing career as a work experience student at a local salon in 1997.

Putting her hand up for work experience was the only way to get out of the school sports carnival, she jokes.

“I was offered a job straight away and began my hairdressing career,” she said. “From here I went on to not only own salons but I was a colour educator for a few major international colour brands and was fortunate enough to educate all over the world.

“The downside to hairdressing to me was that I received chemical poisoning during my first and subsequent pregnancies from dealing with such a toxic substance.

“Once I was diagnosed I then made a choice to have a chemical free, low tox and fully sustainable salon that not only protected me but also my staff and guests.

“I am also super passionate about reducing our carbon footprint so literally everything we do in the salon is focused on living sustainably; we recycle everything, make all our own cleaning and washing products and reuse what we can.

“After growing up in Gympie (it’s my hometown), I had been asked by many friends and family to open a salon up there. I wanted something different though like the town had never seen before so when I saw a beautiful, 150-year-old Queenslander up for grabs in Nash St, I jumped on it.”

Little Birdie Hair Co is located at 4 Nash Street in heritage listed, renovated property.

“The salon has been designed to look similar to our other salons – industrial with old world charm,” Tenille said.

“It’s almost three levels of period features, including original stone walls and fireplaces and each guest is treated to a full service, which includes scented hand towels, complimentary drink and snacks menu, ipads to watch movies, signature dessert flavoured hair treatments, the list is endless.

“We have a local girl, Courtney, working for us who is an amazing hairdresser.

“We were super lucky to win the best Eco Salon in Australia as well as a finalist in the Best Customer Service in Australia. We have also been featured in Style Magazines’ Best Blondes, Best Balayage and Best Hairdressers list for the past two years.

“The salon is open now and we trade Wednesday to Saturday, offering all hair services and lashes and brows. We offer online booking or through our concierge on 0487 871 107.

Tenille wants to offer Gympie a salon like it has never had before: completely sustainable, vegan friendly and five star service, “not to mention the opportunity to chill out and zen on the decks of a beautiful local icon with a magazine and an espresso martini”.

Little Birdie Hair Co is a reduced chemical and sustainability focused boutique brand and Winner of Best Eco Salon in the 2020 Australia Hair Industry Awards.

Tenille is a mum of three girls and a baby boy. She has been in the industry for 23 years with the main portion of her career working as a colourist for some of the world’s leading colour brands, educating all over the globe.
