The mother of a 17-year-old boy fighting for life after being hit by car in an early hour horror incident in Gympie on Thursday has made an emotional tribute to her son, and thanked those who saved his life.

William Winkworth was on Friday in an induced coma in the Princess Alexandra Hospital with critical head and pelvic injuries after being hit by a Ford sedan at 1.08am on Thursday, October 30, on River Road in Gympie.

He endured four hours of surgery on Thursday and doctors were optimistic of his recovery.

William was taken to Gympie Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition Thursday morning, stabilised and then airlifted to the PA in Brisbane.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the driver of the sedan, a 30-year-old man, did not receive any physical injuries.

The forensic crash unit was investigating the incident and police were calling for anyone with information or relevant footage to contact police.

As of Friday afternoon no charges had been laid.

William’s devastated mother, Eliza Kate Winkworth, posted to Facebook on Friday this heart wrenching update on William’s battle:

“This will be the hardest post I’ve ever written,” she said.

“Please I ask all who read on to feel your emotions but not project any kind of tragic outcome onto our current situation.

“I ask instead that you please envision a miraculous and full recovery for William Winkworth, light a candle for him and keep a vigil and send all your loving heart frequencies, healing and positive thoughts his way.

“My beautiful son, William was hit by a car (at speed) at around 1.08am yesterday.

“His injuries were extremely serious and extensive.

“William’s best mate was with him, they were crossing the road. He was unharmed.

“The ambulance officers on the scene and the staff in Gympie Hospital ED were amazing and managed to stabilise his blood pressure with blood transfusions. put tubes for him to breathe and stem the bleeding from his cracked skull.

“His heart was and still is beating on it own. He is young, strong, vital and so, so loved.

“Will was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital. The chopper team was also incredibly capable.

“I will never forget the man who looked me straight in the eye and told me with no uncertainty that I would see my son on the other end.

“I had been told not to expect him to survive by police and told it wasn’t looking good by staff at Gympie Hospital.

“Of course my love not only made it to the PA, he also cruised through a 4 hour surgery with incredible neurosurgeons yesterday. The surgeon was very optimistic about the outcome for him!

“He is being watched around the clock by wonderful nurses, we have so much support and are extremely grateful to the staff at the PA.

“We also have most of our immediate family here in Brisbane, and so much energetic space holding by our incredible tribe, friends, partners and extended family. We love and appreciate you all.

“William is heavily sedated while he recovers from his injuries and surgery.

“The concern is infection from the main head injury and also secondary fractures and breaks, however, I am more than confident that he will overcome every obstacle and milestone we will face together.

“There will be an extended recovery time for our darling man, with more surgeries, allowing him to come back to consciousness, breathe on his own, talk, walk and I can already feel his frustration at being in the one place for so long!

“You cannot stop this one, he has strong blood and is not to be underestimated!

“I feel him strongly, I am meditating with my son and singing him through this journey, I am holding him with a fierce love and unshakeable strength, as are the guides, ancestors and healers in our team.

“He was moving all four limbs when he arrived at the PA before they gave him the paralysing drug for surgery and he coughed when they replaced his breathing and feeding tubes yesterday.

“His temp remains stable and his pupils are dilating evenly when tested.

“This has been a horribly traumatic, shocking and painful time for our family. I am surprised I was able to write this but I have found fortitude and grace in myself through this nightmare.

“We stand strong for you William John. We love you immeasurably. And we will see you in a few days when you’re looking back at us my love

“Thank you for your best wishes and for respecting the privacy of our family at this time, I have explained what happened too many times already so please, no questions at this time unless it’s absolutely necessary, thank you.”
