The community group said pumped hydro was essential as the grid transitions.

Perrett: We need to see study into Borumba Dam proposal

“Clean energy storage like pumped hydro is kicking the energy transition into the next gear – it means we can utilise cheap solar energy all day and night,” Solar Citizens’ national director Ellen Roberts said.

“Queenslanders are world leaders in the uptake of rooftop solar.

“Renewable storage options like pumped hydro and big batteries are smart investments that soak up excess solar energy during the day, making the most of cheap solar energy and ensuring grid stability.

“This is a preferable alternative to charging solar households for exporting their power as is currently proposed by the Australian Energy Market Commission.

“Diversifying Queensland’s energy assets is exactly what energy experts have been calling for in the wake of the Callide C coal-fired power station fire.

“This is a forward-thinking energy storage announcement. This is the kind of investment we need, rather than a rebuild of the Callide Power Station.”

“We look forward to a full assessment of the project’s environmental impacts.”
