Residents alerted to the start of blasting in the next phase of the Bruce Hwy bypass

Notices have been sent to affected residents alerting them to the blasting, which will start in mid-June to remove rock along the new highway alignment between Noosa Rd and Penny Rd at Mothar Mountain.

Nearby residents of the Gympie Bypass project have been told to expect traffic disruptions, noise, vibrations and dust as controlled blasting begins later this month.

The State Government this week sent out notices to residents explaining the works would form part of Contract 1 of the Cooroy to Curra project, and would commence from “mid-June 2021” to “remove rock along the new highway alignment between Noosa and Penny roads, Mothar Mountain, using controlled blasting methods”.

The blasting will begin from Noosa and Penny Roads at the new highway interchange, with more to come “at any location along the Contract 1 corridor” if required.

Residents would also be notified of any further blasting works if they became necessary.

Gympie councillor and East Deep Creek resident Dan Stewart shared the notice on his Dan 4 Gympie Facebook page, saying he didn’t expect too much interruption from the works.

“This should not cause much disruption, the details are in the newsletter. It looks like part of Noosa Rd will be closed where it has been realigned near the old Penny Rd intersection,” Mr Stewart said.

“Meanwhile in regards to the local road network the contractors seem to be in process of moving the East Deep Creek Rd end of Flood Rd eastwards towards the meatworks. Also there is work to realign Noosa Rd around where it will cross the bypass southeast of the speedway.”

Local roads located within the exclusion zone, or within 200m of each blast site, will be temporarily closed during the blasting.

The Department of Transport has been contacted for comment.
