Rescue chopper pulls two from water off Double Island Point, Qld

Two men have been rescued about 7km off the Cooloola Coast after their boat was hit by a rogue wave, with initial reports indicating there had been three people in the water.

Two men have been winched from the ocean to safety in a dramatic aerial rescue off the coast of Double Island Point after their boat was hit by a rogue wave and capsized.

A QAS spokeswoman said emergency crews were alerted to reports of three people in the water an undisclosed distance off the coast of Double Island Point shortly before 2pm on Friday.

An RACQ LifeFlight spokesman said the men, aged in their 70s, were about four nautical miles (7.5km) east of the popular camping and 4WD spot south of Rainbow Beach, when the wave struck.

The wave killed the engine and inundated the back of the vessel with water; the boat capsized soon after.

The men were pulled to safety by the helicopter, and flown to Hervey Bay Hospital for observation.
