A victim who narrowly escaped serious injuries in an horrific crash earlier this week has recounted the incident and called for changes on the stretch of road between Goomboorian and Gympie.

A three-car crash between a white van, a Ford Ranger and another 4WD outside the Goomboorian Travel Stop on Tin Can Bay Rd, during a rainy Tuesday morning, left one person in a serious condition and three others were also taken to hospital.

Cooloola Coast resident Simon Stockton, the driver of the Ford Ranger, said it was a “lucky day” for him and he was left “very grateful for life”, in a social media post on Wednesday.

The crash wrecked the Renault van and the Ranger, with both car bonnets totalled and their mechanical parts spilling out.

“I do honestly believe the fact that I’m a big guy and I sit far back from the steering wheel and pedals is the only reason I was able to pull myself out of this wreck, to not be trapped in there or worse,” he wrote.

“I was hit head-on by a white van that veered onto my side of the road.

“I don’t know if the driver of the van is okay so if his family are reading this I pray for a speedy recovery for you.”

He then recounted how the “entire community came together” to help out in the moments after the crash.

He wrote how a “young bloke in gumboots and an older gentleman directed traffic telling rubberneckers to move on”.

“To everyone that helped thank you,” Mr Stockton wrote.

“To everyone involved I hope you are okay.”

While Mr Stockton declined a full interview with the Gympie Times over what happened, he had clear thoughts on what needed to change to make the road safer.

“I’m a local and I f***ing hate how people drive on that road, always speeding and overtaking at a dumb place,” he said.

“All I have to say is that road on Goomboorian should be 60 and the rest of Tin Can Bay Road to Gympie should be 80 with average speed cameras.”

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said an investigation continued into the crash and no charges had been laid at this stage.
