A violent deckhand and would-be fishing boat skipper will spend Christmas behind bars after a Gympie court heard of his reign of terror that included violent attacks on three people.

An aspiring skipper and deckhand of almost 20 years has been jailed for 27 offences, including attacking a woman, a landlord and a stranger.

Seamus Matthew Smith, 42, was convicted of multiple violent offences , including five counts of assault occasioning bodily harm dating back to January 2021.

The Gympie Magistrates Court heard on November 22, that on January 30, 2021, Smith was arguing with a woman in her home when her landlord rushed down the stairs to intervene.

When the landlord returned to his own space upstairs, Smith followed him, trespassed into his home and attacked him, leaving him with a bleeding lip and loose tooth.

The woman who was the main victim of his violence was punched in the chin, kicked and struck by his fists, the court heard.

Smith also inflicted verbal abuse on her, made harassing phone calls, death threats, intimidation and demands, it heard.

On January 2021, Smith led police on a short chase in the Beerwah area after refusing to stop when he was indicated to.

He was driving unlicensed and had drugs in his saliva, the court was told.

Smith also broke his monitoring device and was caught with cannabis seeds and a pipe in his possession.

His final offence was committed on September 6, 2022 when he punched a stranger.

His lawyer Chris Anderson told the court his client has potential work lined up as a deckhand at a fishing company in Hervey Bay.

Smith had been working in the industry since 2005, and had wanted to get his skipper licence for several years, the court heard.

Magistrate Kurt Fowler said some of the assaults had “no rhyme or reason” and the victim impact statement was “rather disturbing to read”.

He was sentenced to 32 months behind bars and disqualified from driving for two years to be released on January 23, 2023, with seven months declared as time served in jail.

Convictions were recorded.

Smith pleaded guilty to 27 charges, including four counts of assault occasionally bodily harm, entering a dwelling to assault occasioning bodily harm, failing to appear, stealing a car, six counts of breaching bail, wilful damage, driving with drugs in his saliva, possessing drugs, possessing a pipe, evading police, unlicensed driving and stealing.
