A 27-year-old Kandanga man accused of choking his ex partner while returning their two young children after a custody visit will face a committal hearing in the Gympie court in July 2022.

Scott William Folland, a former barista and now full-time sawmill worker, is also accused of leading police on a car chase through the streets of Gympie while over the limit and with two children, aged two and three, in the car.

Mr Folland’s lawyer, Laura Nightingale, told the court her client contested the factual nature of the allegations surrounding what happened on May 7, 2022.

Gympie Magistrates Court was told Mr Folland pushed his alleged victim in the chest and face that day, before getting her in a headlock and trying to drag her away from the car.

He then shoved her against the vehicle and began to choke her with one hand, leaving her gasping for air, it was alleged.

The alleged choking lasted for about 30 seconds before he pushed her onto the ground and sat on top of her while pressing into her neck again.

After finally letting her go, he pulled on her jumper while she tried to back up onto her driveway, it was alleged.

Mr Folland is then alleged to have returned to his vehicle and driven off with the children in the car.

The police were called. Mr Folland allegedly fled down Brisbane Rd and then Graham St followed by police before stopping at an intersection.

As police came within 100m of the car, they claim he suddenly sped through the red lights and turned left.

His vehicle was spotted again on Centro Way, heading northbound onto the Bruce Highway, it is alleged.

He pulled over at the next set of lights where he submitted to a breath test and allegedly blew 0.76 per cent.

He was arrested and taken to the police station.

The matter was adjourned to a committal hearing in Gympie Magistrate Court on July 11.
