A 32-year-old man has been charged by police over a series of alleged car thefts in which the vehicles were taken for a “test drive” and never returned.

Nathan Kyle Lumsden, of Calliope, has been charged with three counts of stealing a vehicle, three counts of driving without a licence disqualified by a court order, and two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle following the string of alleged crimes carried out in October and November.

Mr Lumsden’s arrest came following a plea for help from the public by police in early November.

Police alleged at the time three cars were stolen from the Gympie region, and two from the Sunshine Coast.

The first, a Subaru WRX, was allegedly stolen from a Southside home on October 14.

It was located on Gympie Connection Rd, on the other side of the city, several hours later.

Four other cars were allegedly stolen, including two from Gympie residences on October 15 and October 20, one from Buderim on November 3, and one from Birtinya on November 8.

Police said in the November 10 release their investigations showed someone was using a fake Facebook profile to respond to the online advertisements.

The owner of the account would then meet the seller, take the car for a test drive, and not return, police said.

CCTV images of persons of interest were released as part of the call out.

Mr Lumsden’s charges were mentioned at Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday.

His appearance at the mention were excused, and no pleas were entered.

His matter has been adjourned until January 29, 2024.
