Magistrate Chris Callaghan said this was a “weird” and “strange” case as the threats were allegedly about himself but directed at a woman.
It is alleged he threatened to kill himself.
Defence lawyer Chris Anderson said the “code allows for violence against anyone”.
Mr Anderson told the court Mr Steele was due to start work on Gympie Bypass as a steel fixer on the day of his appearance but it was now “unknown” if that job would go ahead.
Mr Steele shed tears as Mr Callaghan granted him bail and he was reunited with his father who was supporting him in the public gallery.
He will appear in Gympie Magistrates Court on May 8, 2023 for mention.
