Jesse Richard Peters, 29, was convicted of assaulting a 63-year-old Gympie man.

An East Deep Creek man appeared in custody via video link in the Gympie court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to hitting a 63-year-old acquaintance in the face with a steel pipe.

Jesse Richard Peters, 29, was convicted of assaulting a person over the age of 60, after messaging the man and asking him how much he was selling his small boat for.

The man responded that the tinnie wasn’t for sale and then the conversation went downhill.

After arguing back and forth, Peters told the man he was coming over to “put him on the ground,” to which the man said “he didn’t want to see his face again and f--- off”.

The court heard Peters threatened to “smash” the man’s face in and told the man he was “coming over in five (minutes), get ready you old c---”.

Shortly after the message was sent, Peters arrived at the man’s place at East Deep Creek and got out of the car, yelling at him and holding a steel pipe in his hand.

The court heard Peters tried to hit the man with his fist, but missed and was pushed back and told to “f--- off”.

Peters then slammed him in the face with the pipe, fracturing his left cheekbone and giving him a black eye.

The two men had history together and a hostile relationship prior to the attack, the court was told.

Police prosecutor Melissa Campbell said the event was an “irrational act”.

Magistrate Chris Callaghan said the attack was “particularly nasty” and told Peters he needed to sort his anger out.

Defence lawyer Chris Anderson said much of the anger stemmed from not being able to attend his grandfather's funeral that day due to ongoing family issues.

Peters was sentenced to 12 months jail, and will be eligible for parole on April 14.
