A man accused of stabbing another at a Gympie unit block will not return to court until mid-August after he was admitted to hospital.

David George Infante, 49, has been charged with grievous bodily harm over the Friday evening incident at a unit block near the centre of Gympie and just metres from the Gympie Central Primary School.

Police were called to the Lawrence St flats shortly before 6pm.

They have alleged Mr Infante and an unidentified 50-year-old man, know to Mr Infante, were involved in an “altercation” at the unit, which was under police guard on Saturday morning.

The alleged victim was seriously injured and was taken to Gympie Hospital before being flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Mr Infante was arrested and charged.

The unit, at the rear of the block and on the ground floor, was cordoned off by police and declared a crime scene.

Mr Infante’s matter was briefly mentioned at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Saturday morning, where it was adjourned to Gympie.

On Monday, the court was told Mr Infante was still in hospital “and unable to provide instructions”.

The court did not hear what injuries or ailment had landed him in medical care.

Defence lawyer Kim Sindel said she would be seeking to submit a legal aide application for Mr Infante before his next appearance.

The court heard Ms Sindel was handling the case at the Monday hearing as the duty lawyer had a conflict with the matter.

Police prosecutor Mel Campbell did not oppose the adjournment, saying the matter would need to go up to the District Court owing to the seriousness of the charge.

A brief of evidence was ordered to be provided to Mr Infante, and the matter was adjourned to Monday, August 19, 204, for further mention.

His appearance will be excused and he was remanded in custody.

No application for bail was entered at either the Maroochydore or Gympie hearings.
