A young deckhand has landed himself “in red hot s--t” after being caught dealing thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs and four pencil guns.
Cody James Kelly, 21, of South Gladstone, pleaded guilty in Gympie District Court on Thursday to one count of supplying a category A weapon, and 15 counts of supplying dangerous drugs.
The court heard the string of crimes was carried out at Gympie over a year, from January 2022 to February 2023.
Kelly’s most serious crime was trying to sell four pencil guns.
The court was told he had been approached by text message in June 2022 by 20-year-old Southside man Kyle Anthony Lahiff, asking whether he could find buyers for six of the homemade weapons for $100 each.
The court heard Kelly soon after told Lahiff he had a buyer for four of the weapons, which were capable of firing .22 calibre rounds.
Kelly tried to raise the price of the weapons in the deal to $200 each so the pair could “make some coin”.

The court heard he became concerned Lahiff would delete the text messages about the deal.
Judge Glen Cash said this showed Kelly’s clear understanding of, in the 21-year-old’s own words, his “involvement in red hot s--t”.
Lahiff was sentenced at Gympie Magistrates Court in August to 18 months probation for his involvement in the deal.
However, on Thursday the District Court was told this had been a “jurisdictional error” which should have been dealt with in a higher court, and as such Lahiff’s sentence should not have any influence on what Kelly was given for his role.

Kelly was sentenced to six months’ jail for supplying the weapons.
Another 18 months jail was added on top for the drugs charges, bringing his total sentence to two years.
The court heard Kelly had dealt, or arranged to deal, marijuana, MDMA, and meth.
The biggest of the deals was in March 2022 when Kelly supplied 4.21kg of marijuana worth about $15,000.
Judge Cash gave him a parole release date of Friday, November 17, owing to nine months already served in pre-sentence custody.
