The extremes of Gympie weather were on full show on Wednesday afternoon, with fireys forced to fight a bushfire at Gympie State High hours before storms rolled across the region.
Emergency crews were called to the school grounds on Cootharaba Rd, at 2.30pm after a large grassfire spread, and threatened a shed.
Four firefighting teams battled the blaze across the afternoon.
A QFES spokeswoman said by 2.45pm fireys had the fire north of the shed under control.
The fire was extinguished by 3.30pm, with only several wooden stumps at the school still smouldering.
Crews remained at the scene until 4.30pm.
Police said the fire was not suspicious.
The stark contrast in weather changes was highlighted by councillor Bruce Devereaux an hour after the fire was doused.
‘We’ll have to get out and push:’ Residents respond to speed reduction
“School ovals on fire within metres of Gympie High then turn around and there’s a rainbow being all look at me,” Mr Devereaux said.
“Says it all about the sort of summer we have in stall for us.
“Many thanks to all involved in taking care of the grass fire.”
