The Gympie Regional Junior Cricket Association is in a good place as witnessed by the large turnout for the end-of-season awards night at One Mile Cricket Club on Friday, March 3.

Junior co-ordinator Alastair Lewis said about 180 people attended the celebrations, with about 70 junior cricketers from the Gympie region also there.

“It must have been a good night because at one point we ran out of bread rolls,” Lewis joked.

“But I do I think it all went really well.

“In the four years that I’ve been involved with the juniors, that’s probably the best attendance we have had.

“The junior president Todd Keogh and I have just been progressively building on it as much as we can.

“We felt Friday night was a bit of success for quite a few years’ hard work.

“We could definitely see that it’s just getting bigger and bigger and improving. That was quite rewarding for Todd and myself.”

There were a number of awards handed out on the night, with the representative player of the year going to Cooper Keogh.

“That was for his efforts at the state titles on the Gold Coast,” Lewis said.

“He did quite well there.”

The Gympie Regional Junior Club Cricketer of the Year award went to Lewis Andreassen and that was judged by the number of wickets and catches taken and the runs scored.

Standouts were Charlotte Reed, Marraya Buckley and Isabella Wilcox who all captured junior girls awards.

They also took out awards in the overall boys and girls combined sections.

Alastair Lewis said the future of junior Gympie cricket was bright and hoped that the youngsters would one day go on to play for the regional Gympie side Gympie Gold.

“That’s exactly what we’re hoping for,” Lewis said.

“When I came back here with cricket four years ago with my young fella I think there was probably about 25 kids.

“I couldn’t believe it because I played cricket in Gympie as a junior myself and there were about 300-400 kids at least.

“And ‘I thought oh my gosh. What has happened to cricket?’

“So now to have 64 kids signed up in our stage one, two and three and 30 kids signed up in our Blasters is a pretty big achievement.

“We think we can really we can get it up over 100 next year, which would be lovely."

The Gympie junior cricket season will relaunch in September 2023 and Lewis said there were big plans for that, with coaches from Queensland Cricket set to come to the region and hold courses and run drills for youngsters to take part in.
