Curra father Carl Stevens is taking affirmative action to change a dangerous stretch of road where his daughter was involved in a terrifying accident.

Mr Stevens told The Gympie Times in July he wanted the intersection of David Drive and the Bruce Hwy next to the Puma Service Station at Curra to be made safer, after his daughter Louise was involved in a serious accident there.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Department responded to Mr Steven’s concerns in July, deeming the road to be “not dangerous” and not a high priority for upgrade.

The petition, sponsored by Gympie MP Tony Perrett, was launched on July 27 and asks for the speed limit at the intersection to be lowered from 100km/h to 80km/h.

“There was recently a four vehicle collision at this site, which resulted in the hospitalisation of some vehicle occupants,” the petition reads.

“This is a very busy service station and has many vehicles taking risks to merge on to the Bruce Highway.”

“The problem has seen many other similar incidents further south at the Purcell Drive and Bruce Highway intersection.”

“Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to take all actions necessary to ensure that the Department of Main Roads investigate the numerous accidents and near misses at the David Drive and Bruce Highway at the Puma service station at Curra, Queensland and reduce the speed limit from 100 kph to 80 kph around the site.”

The petition has reached 200 signatures.
