Mayor reveals what’s on in Gympie this month

OPINION: In stark contrast to 2020 where events were cancelled in rapid succession this month has no shortage of fun on the calendar, Mayor Glen Hartwig says

The Gympie Show, the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival and the Australian Rally Championships are all being held across the region over the next few weeks.

A message from Mayor Glen Hartwig

What a difference a year makes.

When I think back to where we were this time last year, it makes me appreciate how far our region has come as we continue to recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

During 2020, all of our region’s major events were called off due to the forced lockdown, which had significant financial impacts for many community organisations and our region.

As I look ahead to what’s on this month by comparison, it’s fair to say that the Gympie region will be the place to be during May.

Council’s Forage Gympie Region festival, which commenced on the weekend, celebrates everything that is great about our region including our people, our amazing landscape, and the quality food our farmers produce. I am proud to see that so many of our region’s hardworking producers, farm shops, restaurants and local businesses were able to come together to showcase our special part of the world.

The Gympie Show and The Goomeri Pumpkin Festival are also set to return this year, after being forced to cancel due to COVID-19 restrictions. Both events have been institutions of our region for many years and I am looking forward to both the Gympie Showgrounds and the Goomeri Township being filled with people once more.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate both The Gympie Show Society and The Goomeri Pumpkin Festival on getting through what has been a difficult period for both organisations and I wish you all the best with your events.

I am also excited to announce that Gympie has been selected to host round two of The RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 May.

Rally is coming to Gympie.

This is such a great result for our region, as we are hosting the only Queensland stage of this year’s national championship. Stay tuned to council’s Facebook in the coming weeks, as we announce more details about our plans to celebrate the rally coming to town.

There is so much to see and do during May, so I encourage you all to get your family and friends together and experience what is great about our region.
