A young mechanic who was test driving a motorbike for a client has been “surprising the doctors” after a collision between an SUV and the bike left him with critical injuries.
The 21-year-old was airlifted with critical injuries after the crash occurred about 8.30am last Friday, November 17, at the intersection of two low-speed residential streets in the heart of Gympie.
Ryan, whose family wished only to be known by his first name, was critical, but managed to stabilise after four hours, “much to the amazement of the doctors,” his aunt Lyn Leine said on Monday.
She said her nephew was originally from Melbourne and had come up to Queensland to work as a mechanic.
He was out test driving a client’s bike when the incident happened, she said.

He went through three major surgeries and his family, mostly from Melbourne, all flew up.
“We never want to have another day like this,” Ms Leine said.
The family were so grateful to all the first responders, the doctors and how they worked to keep him alive, she said.
Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam vision to come forward.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 36-year-old Gympie woman, was transported to hospital for monitoring.
The Kawasaki motorbike and a Nissan SUV had collided at the intersection of Louisa Street and Musgrave Street, a few metres from the Gympie West Store and Service Station.
It was reported the bike was thrown into the air and came to rest against a rock retaining wall in the front yard of a home.
The front driver’s side of the SUV, a Nissan Qashqai, was crumpled in the crash and the front driver’s side tyre popped.
Investigations are continuing.
