A popular teenager tragically struck by a car and killed outside Gympie will be remembered across the region with two memorials in the works.
Gympie Regional councillors are expected to approve the memorials for 14-year-old Levi Hanna at their last meeting for 2023, 11 months after the beloved teenager’s tragic death in early February.
The Gympie State High School student had stepped off a bus at Canina, 12km northeast of Gympie, with his younger sister when he was struck by a car travelling southwest along Tin Can Bay Rd.
He was flown to Queensland Children’s Hospital with critical injuries, and died three days later.
Hundreds of mourners gathered in a touching farewell to Levi at Rainbow Beach, a favourite spot for the young teen who had a passion for fishing and nature.
Now Levi’s memory is expected to live on in two parts of the region.
The first is a proposed memorial seat at Mullens Creek Park, on the coastline east of Cooloola Cove.
And a culvert crossing at Window Rd, Canina, not far from his family home, is to be renamed Levi’s Crossing.
The crossing is near the road’s intersection with Tin Can Bay Rd.
The memorials were requested by Levi’s family.
They are expected to fundraise for the costs of installing the seat, the council’s staff report says.
Councillors will decide whether to green light the memorials at its last meeting for 2023, at the Town Hall on Wednesday, December 13.
