A TORQUAY man who drove his car into an embankment was three times the legal limit when he reached for a pack of cigarettes while driving on the Bruce Hwy at Kybong.

Perren Michael Forest, 45, was driving from Hervey Bay to the Sunshine Coast on September 28 when witnesses reported him swerving on the median strip and landing in an embankment.

Police observed the man was unsteady on his feet after the crash with a breath test revealing the man had been driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.167.

The driver was the first to admit in court how unwise his behaviour had been. "It was a stupid thing to do. I shouldn't have done it - I'm just glad no one else was hurt," Forest said.

The driver was disqualified for seven months and fined $1300.
