A man will face court later this month on numerous charges after allegedly releasing a noxious substance at a Gympie hotel.

The incident, at the Queenslander Hotel on August 6, resulted in the building being evacuated and patrons receiving medical treatment.

Police were called to the business along Mary Street in Gympie about 1am following reports of an unknown substance being released in two separate areas of the premises.

About 100 staff and patrons were evacuated, while emergency crews worked to determine the source of the chemical.

A number of people received medical treatment at the scene for symptoms such as eye and throat irritation.

Ongoing investigations by Gympie police, including the review of CCTV, led to a search warrant being executed at Pie Creek on Friday, which allegedly uncovered a quantity of chilli spray.

A 35-year-old Pie Creek man was arrested and charged with five counts of common assault and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was granted police bail is due to appear in Gympie Magistrates Court on August 29.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and police are appealing for any further witnesses who were present to come forward.
