A mysterious smelly substance has caused an overnight evacuation of a hotel north of Brisbane.
At least 18 people were evacuated from the Queenslander Hotel in Gympie after a “funny smelling gas” filled the air around midnight.
Emergency services, including two firefighters in breathing apparatus, checked over the hotel on Mary St but could not locate where the smell had come from or what kind of substance it was.
Paramedics assessed those exposed to the smell, and took one person with minor respiratory symptoms to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said firefighters swabbed the hotel and found only minor readings of the existence of a substance but further tests came back negative.
“They were unable to ascertain where the smell came from,” he said.
A QFES scientific squad then arrived on scene to conduct a final safety check before allowing everyone to retner the hotel about 4am.
