Maleny, Montville Chambers of Commerce launch offer for Gympie flood victims

A group of Gympie business owners affected by the devastating January and February floods are being offered the chance to take some time off thanks to the generosity of their southern neighbours. Here’s how to nominate someone you know is in need of a hinterland holiday.

Gympie region business owners affected by this year’s devastating floods are being given the chance to take a load off thanks to the efforts of two Sunshine Coast Chambers of Commerce who have joined forces.

The Montville and Maleny Chambers, with the help of The Gympie Times, are offering up 15 tourism and accommodation packages for people affected by the floods.

Now, they want people to help deliver them to those who need them.

The packages include stays for couples or families of up to four at Sunshine Coast holiday spots like Avocado Grove, Mill Hill Cottage, Miita Glen Guesthouse B&B, and Montville Mountain Inn.

Vouchers from businesses including Maleny Cheese, Gypsy Table, and mixed cases of Brouhaha Brew have been donated to the Chambers as part of their offer, too.

The Chambers are calling for people to nominate business owners from across the Gympie region, not only within the city itself but out west including Kilkivan, Booubyjan and Tansey.

The Montville and Maleny Chambers of Commerce are offering the packages to business owners affected by the floods, not only in Gympie city which was inundated in February, but in the region’s west which was flooded the month before.

Gympie was inundated during the February floods when the Mary River peaked at almost 23m.

The region’s western townships were damaged in January after an intense overnight deluge dumped hundreds of millimetres of rain across the area, washing out roads and flooding towns and farms.

Some parts recording more than 900mm in just a few hours.

Montville Chamber of Commerce President Shiralee Cooper said the Sunshine Coast hinterland had been lucky enough to avoid major damage from those floods, and wanted to help those less lucky.

“Having seen the catastrophic flooding in and around our Gympie neighbours, we wanted to reach out to those struggling businesses impacted once again,” Ms Cooper said.

Chamber presidents Spencer Shaw and Shiralee Cooper are calling for nominations, which close at midnight April 21, 2022.

Maleny chamber president Spencer Shaw said members understood the “disruption and emotions that many Gympie Businesses may have been or still are suffering and we just wanted to help with a little break away and spoiling”.

Nominations are open until midnight Thursday April 21 to submit.

They must include 50 words outlining their nominee’s eligibility, along with a contact number or email address they can be reached at.

Those chosen will be notified by the Maleny and Montville Chambers of Commerce within the next two days after that and will need to be available on the 26th for the packages to be awarded in Gympie.

Nominations can be sent to gympietimes@news.com.au.
