Lock it or lose it

JUST because it's the silly season doesn't mean we have to let common sense go out the window, authorities say.

After increasing reports of theft from vehicles and backyards in the region, Gympie police are urging people to keep their valuables secure.  Gympie's acting senior sergeant Rod Venn said while the problem is not out of hand; it will worsen if more property and valuables are left insecure.  He advised all residents to ensure vehicles; homes and sheds are locked, even when nearby, such as working in the garden.  "We're all responsible for our own property," he said.  "People can lessen their chance of becoming a victim of crime by making their values more secure."  The Gympie Crime Prevention Team recently checked parked cars at Goldfields Plaza for security.  They left reminders on many vehicles they found unlocked or with valuable property in view.  "We viewed keys in the ignition, windows down, doors unlocked, wallets and handbags on the passenger seats, mobile phones, house and garage keys/remotes and personal documents with names and addresses on," the team said. "Please think before you walk away from your car and look at what you can see, especially those expensive Christmas presents that you so nicely left on the seat for someone to take."
