About $500,000 worth of classic cars, dirt bikes and boats were destroyed in a ferocious fire which gutted a rural industrial shed outside Gympie on Wednesday.
Emergency crews rushed to contain the fire on Burgess Road at Calico Creek about midday, as flames engulfed the shed and threatened a nearby house.
Inside the shed were 15 dirt bikes, 15 cars and three boats.
The fire was so intense it produced explosions and a plume of “thick black smoke” which Gympie station officer Adrian Bond said firesy “were able to see quite clearly” from the city 15km away.
The flames reportedly reached 20m high at times.
Multiple rural and urban firefighting crews battled for an hour to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from jumping to a home about 10m from the industrial shed on Burgess Rd.
No one was injured in the fire.
Police said the fire was non-suspicious, but no source has been identified.
