Kilkivan crash site on Wide Bay Hwy a haunting scene

Days after a young woman inexplicably veered off the Wide Bay Highway and into a tree on the outskirts of the South Burnett township the evidence of what happened there is haunting.

Haunting videos from fatal Kilkivan crash site

Only the scars remained at the entrance to Kilkivan on Wednesday, where four days earlier a fiery accident claimed the life of a young woman.

The identity of the 31-year-old Sexton woman - who was 30km from home when the Rav4 she was driving veered off the Wide Bay Highway going into Kilkivan about 2.20am on Saturday - had not been released on Wednesday night.

Of the forensic investigation into the accident, Police Media said simply, there was “nothing further to be provided regarding the fatal crash at Kilkivan”.

Days earlier they had been calling for witnesses.

Evidence of the crash was chilling, with a clear path of flattened grass where the SUV had left the Wide Bay Highway on a sweeping bend, hitting a tree before coming to rest at the bottom of an embankment.

The tree, a large gum, showed stark evidence of impact, with the bark stripped from its lower half.

Down the embankment, an area of scorched earth was visible from the road where the car had come to rest after catching fire.

Debris including glass, scorched metal and car parts was scattered through the grass.

About 100m away, a country-style Queenslander is perched beside the road; the owner the first person to see the fire and call police last Saturday morning after being woken by their barking dogs.

A tragic and devastating scene of a young life lost too soon.
