A 24 year old Cooloola Cove man has been left more than $8000 out of pocket after he destroyed a welfare home in Toogoolawah and threatened neighbours with a metal pole during a drunken rampage in February.

Joshua Peter Dillon appeared in Gympie Magistrates Court for four charges, including public nuisance, obstructing police and two charges of damaging property.

He pleaded guilty to all charges.

The police prosecutor told the court Dillon was at his father’s public welfare house at Toogoolawah on the morning of February 5, and was left alone on the property.

The prosecutor said police received a call from neighbours saying Dillon was in the street smashing glass before violently threatening the neighbours with a metal pole.

“A resident could hear the dwelling being trashed inside, sounds of windows smashing, things being thrown around,” the prosecutor said.

Police found Dillon behind the wheel of a car, where he argued with police and appeared drunk.

He was placed under arrest for wilful damage and threatened officers with violence before being placed inside a police car, where he was seen spitting on the walls.

The court heard numerous windows, doors and furniture were destroyed in the rampage.

Defence lawyer Chris Anderson said his client’s rampage came from seeing his alcoholic father after no contact for some time, and Dillon was mirroring his father’s actions after drinking.

Mr Anderson said his client was described by a co-worker at a Tin Can Bay restaurant as “a good kid”.

Dillon was given probation for 12 months and ordered to pay $8140 in restitution to the Queensland Government Community Housing Department.

A conviction was recorded.
