Two of Gympie’s primary schools are pulling more than two thirds of their students from outside their catchment areas, new Queensland school data reveals.
One Mile and Jones Hill state schools rank among the highest out-of-catchment-student rates in Queensland, according to the new figures from the State Education Department.
They show 283 of the more than 420 students enrolled at One Mile were travelling from outside its catchment area (a rate of 68 per cent) while 293 of Jones Hill’s 440-plus student population were in the same boat (67 per cent).
Gympie West State School was not far behind; 62 per cent of its students from outside its catchment, while at Gympie South State School, students from outside the catchment accounted for half the cohort.
The rate was significantly lower for the region’s public high schools; 31 per cent of Gympie State High School’s students were outside the catchment, as were 30 per cent of James Nash students.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Education told News Corp it was parents’ choice whether to enrol their student at the local school or gain entry at another.
Enrolment management plans were designed to accommodate local students.
“Where there is spare capacity, the principal may offer places to out-of-catchment students in line with their school enrolment management plan,” she said.
