Owners of the site have proposed a business development that is a complete turnaround to the original plan, and something which Gympie Regional Council must now consider

The future of Gympie’s vacant Brodies fast food outlet continues to change, with plans now unveiled to replace the long-shuttered restaurant with a funeral parlour.

Invocare Australia has asked Gympie Regional Council for approval to build the parlour on part of the block fronting Channon Street and the Bruce Highway.

In August last year the council gave a green light for developers to transform the block, which has a strip of retail shops at its western edge, into a new showroom for Supercheap Auto and a second retail store.

This latest application keeps the Supercheap showroom (which will replace the retail strip) but substitutes the funeral parlour for the retail outlet.

The building will be demolished and replaced as part of the site’s redevelopment.

The parlour will include a 40-person chapel and 13 parking spaces.

No cremations will be done there.

There will also be 21 parking spots available for customers visiting the new Supercheap Auto shop.

Invocare’s application says changing the original retail outlet to a funeral parlour will reduce traffic on and around the site, which sits at the intersection of two of Gympie’s busiest arterials.

Approval for the new Supercheap showroom and the building intended to become home to the funeral parlour will remain active until 2026.
