The community is mourning the tragic death overnight of nine-year-old Goomeri footy star Xavier Webb, who suffered significant burns from a petrol fire accident 11 days ago.
Xavier was playing at private property in Goomeri on July 8, when he received burns to 60 per cent of his body and had to be flown by LifeFlight to Queensland Children’s Hospital and placed in an induced coma.
Paramedics initially treated Xavier on scene at around 7pm, before taking him to a showground to rendezvous with the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crew.
The Goomeri State School student suffered “significant” burns to his body, face and airways.
Xavier’s mother Sandra Webb said he had since undergone surgery every two days in an effort to save him, with the doctors reassessing his situation along the way.
Tragically though, Xavier died in the early hours of Monday morning.
Ms Webb said that when she initially heard about the accident, she was “hysterical” and “angry”.
“Everything was going through my mind at once,” Ms Webb said.
“No parent expects this to happen to their child.”
Xavier’s aunt Caroline Webb described her nephew as a “happy, fun and loving” child who adored his family.
“He loved football and motorbike riding,” Mrs Webb said.
“He was always running around with a smile on his face, would always be there to make you happy when you’re down.
“He just knew how to put a smile on your face without trying.”
Mrs Webb said her favourite memory of the Goomeri State School student was watching him play football.
“He was a football star,” she said.
Mrs Webb said any donations made to the GoFundMe set up for Xavier would go towards his funeral and other costs.
“His mum and dad aren’t doing too good as it’s the second child they have lost in five years,” she said.
“No one is coping so well with it.
“They’ve also got the stress of trying to find a house to live in by the 25th of July.”
Xavier’s aunt, Lorralee Webb, described her nephew as a “happy-go-lucky” boy who loved football, motorbikes and fishing.
“When my sister Caroline told me he got badly burnt I just cried and when my niece rang me to tell me he had passed away my heart broke, I cried, I didn't want to believe it,” Ms Webb said.
“My family has been through a lot of heartache in the last four and a half years.”
