Gympie’s flood damaged River to Rail Trail to partially reopen

Gympie Regional Council will clean up sections of the popular 7.8km trail and reopen it to the public.

Rain Outlook

Gympie’s flood ravaged River to Rail Trail will get some council attention and at least part of it will reopen to the public in May.

The Mary River section of the popular 7.8km walking trail has been closed since the January floods, but the stretch between Kidd Bridge and Excelsior Road will be cleaned and made safe to use this month, the Gympie Regional Council has confirmed.

Further work on cleaning and removing debris will continue after May.

The Sands Park area has had more severe landscape damage and will be assessed and restored once council funding is available, a council spokesperson said.

“The trail is very important for people’s health and wellbeing, so we’re hoping to re-open by the end of May,” councillor Dan Stewart said.
