Rain, flash flooding predicted for Gympie Show week

The Gympie region could be in for 40mm of rain every day next week, with warnings of possible flash flooding as the region counts down to the 2022 Gympie Show and the Bureau warns residents to keep an eye on the weather.

Rain Outlook

A week of rain delivering up to 200mm across the Gympie region is predicted from tomorrow right through until Show Thursday and with possible flash flooding, the Bureau of Meteorology said on Thursday.

2022 Gympie Show organisers and fans will hoping the weather is kind, after the decision was made just a few weeks ago to go ahead with the Show when vaccine mandates were lifted. In addition, pre-polling ahead of the federal election opens on Monday, May 9, and more than 17,000 Gympie voters are tipped to vote ahead of May 21.

Higgins Storm Chasing predicted the Wide Bay region would receive about 200mm of rainfall over the next week, but BOM meteorologist Brooke Pagel said this was less of a prediction and more of a possibility.

She said the rain was expected to be preceded by thunderstorms over the weekend.

“We’re looking at potentially 40mm of rain per day,” she said.

But despite the predicted downpour, Ms Pagel said it was unlikely the Gympie region would experience a third flood akin to the events in January and February; though flash flooding in local creeks and waterways was possible.

“A lot of those low lying bridges may have some flash flooding and things like that, but for the Mary River and things it’s not going to be anything like a few months ago,” Ms Pagel said.

In the meantime, she said it was important for residents to keep up to date with the Bureau’s updates.

“Our forecast will be updated daily and we will be issuing warnings leading up to the event,” she said.

“We’re just recommending everyone to keep an eye on the forecast, an eye on the warnings and to listen to the SES.”
