Gympie residents shivered in their boots through the region’s coldest morning of the year on Thursday, with the mercury plunging to almost seven degrees below the average June minimum.
Temperatures at 6:38am hit 1.3C but felt like a frigid -0.5C, BoM meteorologist Helen Reid said.
The cold is expected to peak Friday morning with a minimum of 2C but amd feel slightly colder than Thursday.
“Tomorrow could very well be the coldest,” Ms Reid said.
Thursday and Friday are expected to receive a maximum temperature of 19C during the day.
The frigid front will fortunately be expected to ease the coming week with a gradual temperature climb along with sunshine.
BoM expects day temperatures to stretch over 20C from Monday onwards.
BoM had no observations of frost in Gympie, but Goomeri, Curra and Kingaroy encountered frosty grounds with Kingaroy’s temperature reaching -1.4C.
Ms Reid said the cold front had been caused by a high-pressure system over south east Queensland bringing cold dry air from the pole with a south-westerly flow.
Gympie last felt such freezing temperatures only last year at 0.8C on June 12, Ms Reid saide.
The region’s coldest morning was -4.3C in July 2007, according to Weatherzone.
