Gympie police are investigating after the Gympie skatepark was vandalised on Monday night.
Police were called to the Gympie Youth Precinct and skatepark on River Rd early on Tuesday morning after the multi-million dollar youth precinct was subject to extensive vandalism and littering.
A Queensland Police spokesperson said Police were called to the Gympie Memorial Pool skatepark at 7am on Tuesday morning, with reports the youth precinct had been vandalised.
The culprits defaced a boarded-up structure near the River Rd entrance to the skate park, as well as the tables and nearby bins.
Rubbish was also strewn about.
Cameras were recently been installed at the skatepark, but the precinct was in darkness due to the overhead lights not working.
It comes as Gympie regional councillor Bruce Devereaux discovered his council car had also acquired a spray painted phallic symbol overnight, but rejected the idea it was a targeted attack.
As for the skatepark, Mr Devereaux said Monday was not the first time this had happened.
The vandalised area, which was an enclosed structure, had been boarded up after its glass windows were smashed several times.
“It was a room they could use if they had an event or something like that,” Mr Devereaux said.
He said the skatepark cost $2.8 million when it was built in 2019.
“It is a shame, and we’ve got places they can do it if they want to do it.”
Mr Devereaux could not comment on whether anything was being done to combat the issue of graffiti on council’s end.
Police are continuing to make inquiries into the matter.
