A war of attrition has left the Gympie Hammers’ Division 2 men’s list hamstrung by injury to this point of season 2021, but not enough to get in the way of a huge rivalry match this weekend.
Hammers president Jason McPherson this week put a callout on social media for interested potential players to get in touch, with an injury list building to the point of “stretching our depth”.
“We’ve had a couple of broken bones, a knee, an ankle, a wrist, but thankfully not all on the one player,” McPherson said.
“We’ve just had a few bumps in the wrong places at the wrong times and it’s built up a bit.”
McPherson insisted the healthy Hammers squad members would be ready and raring to take on the Nambour Crushers in the storeyed Bone of Contention rivalry match between the two clubs at Albert Park on Saturday afternoon (July 10).
He encouraged any potential players to reach out, saying it was “never too late” to pull on the boots and become a Hammer.
“We’re still building as a club, we’re always building, it’s never too late to come down and play some rugby,” he said.
