A GOOMBOORIAN man has drowned after being thrown from a tinny in rough conditions near Carlo Pt, in the Tin Can Inlet yesterday.

A GOOMBOORIAN man has drowned after being thrown from a tinny in rough conditions near Carlo Pt, in the Tin Can Inlet on Wednesday.

The man, 70, was pulled from the water but was unable to be revived after the 3.75m craft overturned and sank.

A second man, 46, from Victoria, was able to be rescued.

Hervey Bay Water Police Senior Constable Marty Webb said the two were father and son and were fishing when the boat sank.

A Tin Can Bay Coast Guard official described conditions as "pretty rough" with very choppy seas to about 0.5m and winds of 20 to 25 knots.

The Coast Guard was called about midday to try to locate the vessel, but was stood down after an unsuccessful search.

The man's name was not available.

The incident occurred about 3km north of Carlo Point, officials said yesterday.

The dead man was pulled from the water about 12.10pm and a nearby boatie performed CPR before returning to Carlo Point boat ramp, where he was met by paramedics.

Paramedics also performed CPR on the man but were unable to revive him, an ambulance spokesman said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The younger man had attempted to swim to a nearby boat after being thrown into the water and was rescued by another boatie in the area.

Police said the older man's next of kin had been advised and a report would be prepared for the Coroner.

Police Media advised that a Triple-0 call had come in about 11.52am.

A second tinny and a larger craft were involved in the rescue of the younger man.

A Tin Can Bay ambulance spokesman said two units were dispatched and arrived at the Carlo Point ramp about 12.20pm.

They found the 70-year-old man already deceased.

It is thought they were not wearing life jackets.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident an apparently unoccupied small craft, believed to be a tinny, was reported to police off Teewah Beach about 8.20pm Tuesday.

Gympie police said the craft was spotted drifting about 20 to 30m offshore and it was initially thought occupants had made it to shore safely.

However, investigations showed the craft had come adrift at Moreton Island and had floated northwards before being spotted.
